Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Hi, i'm coming in as an Exchange student for the winter season and after studies i'll be looking for work under the WHP. I'm not sure what to do as to purchase comprehensive travel insurance for entire duration or buy a local health insurance plan over there? My uni recommended to get a temporary health insurance plan by david cummings since i'll be studying for less than 6 months. However i read over the policy and there was no mention of snow activities or heli evacuations of any sort. I'm looking to do a lot of snowboarding and also off-piste so i'm wondering what health insurance would provide excellent cover for this lifestyle? The david cummings only has a coverage of 1mil wheras aussie travel insurance has unlimited medical coverage but will cost about $1400-2200AUD.

What would you recommend if you were in my shoes?

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Hey Movendi,

Tough call... how long are you going to be here in all?

Could be worth looking at some online brokers too, I had a look at some for a Mexico trip we'll be doing next week and there seems to be a few out there, so worth a look.

I'd say it'd almost be worth getting 3 months worth, then applying for MSP as soon as you get settled. That way you're only paying through the nose for 3 months worth of coverage. Still, that's me...

Also, will you only be boarding in Canada, or are you going to hit the US too? You're probably right with the coverage thing if you're going to be boarding in the US, as things can get fubar down there if you don't have enough coverage and they need to pull you out of the woods.

Again, tough call...

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Hey Jared thanks for the quick reply.

My study period will go from Jan-Late April and i will take maybe a 2 month holiday or start working. Most likely will return by the end of July unless i find a better reason to extend my stay and defer a semester :O.

I plan to be doing snowboarding in the states mainly in Washington and Oregon: Mt Baker, Crystal Mountain and Mt Hood. But even if i went with the local canadian health insurance it still only covers 1mil which i think might not be enough extreme cases such as heli evacuation, hospitalisation, surgey, repartiation, etc.

I was thinking of taking out 3-4 month travel insurance and go with MSP but what is the medical cover like under the MSP if i snowboarded and required medical attention from an extreme accident? I leave next friday and i am frustrated thoroughly reading every travel insurance PDS to only find out there's a clause that doesn't make it some worth it. I just read the travelsure QBE + addVantage pack and while it covers snowboarding, it doesn't mention if it's off-piste and it also has some bizarre exclusion clauses. Hmm

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Actually, a friend of mine just got a years worth of travel insurance for the US for about $50 - she's living across here, and I'm not sure what sort of deal it is, but she was definitely getting it for snowboarding. Off piste and backcountry stuff is different from the usual though, so you may pay a premium for that... not sure if it's different if you're a resident of Aus vs Canada? Certainly be worth looking at some brokers online and seeing what they can do, and changing your nationality from AU to CAN and checking.

If you're going to be here longer than three months, I'd definitely say get MSP, as if you're snowboarding in BC and have accidents, then you'll be covered after that three month period at least.

It'll be interesting to hear how you go with the study thing as well - I've heard from a bunch of people who come across here to work, but not that many who are here to study - keep us updated on what you get up to!

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

So i spoke to a chap in QBE and he was hinting the same thing about going with an insurance broker. It does make sense but i'm still concerned having a policy from a canadian broker and getting into a ski accident in the states or even getting into a personal liability issue somewhere in the states or canada :O. Any suggestions which companies to look at or recommendations from friends colleagues?

Cheers

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

The place I think we'll be going with is http://www.kanetix.ca/, and I just have a look and they actually even have travel insurance policies for International Students... could be worth a look.

Cilla, that's quite a reasonable policy I think, particularly if it's for anywhere in the world. I guess it doesn't really suit Movendi as it doesn't cover out of bounds stuff.

Sounds like you might be stuck paying a premium if you want to go off piste... bugger!

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Yea i checked that kanetix site already and it only offers me one plan for me (as an international student) which is the "TIC - Travel insurance" with a extremely low $500,000 coverage. As i will be snowboarding frequently and in the states i think something with at least $5 million is more appropriate, even more. It's just that i can't even find any at above $2mil.

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

That's a bit crazy. Tell you what, would you be able to get regular travel insurance for day to day stuff, which would be cheaper, then see if there is something the other guys use when you get across here, and only get that for the periods you're actually going back country? Might be a bit of screwing around, but hey, could be cheaper too.

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

I would check the Travel Insurance Direct website and if your not sure if it covers it I would email or call them. Theres seems to be pretty comprehensive and I've had friends use them and claim successfully quite easily as well. Also if it turns out they are okay, try this coupon for 10% off: TIDXMAS2009

Oh and also their Canada and America cover is worldwide cover, so even if you were going to just Canada you pay the same price and get cover in the States just incase you do go.

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Hey guys,

I have a bit of a problem here.
I'm leaving Australia in February 3.
However I won't get to Canada till sometime in March because i'm going on Holidays to the Philippines first. (i'm going on a WHP permit)

Ok my problem is that I don't know when i will be coming back to Aus. If i like Canada i will end up staying the 24months there.
If i don't... i might come back after 6months.

I haven't found a travel insurance company that will insure you if you don't have a return date. Now i could just easily make one up (e.g. coming back in 6months and say I will return in July. Then extend the policy if i plan on staying in Canada).

I rang itrek and they said I NEED a return ticket to Australia when i leave to be able to be covered.
Is this true?

@ Cilla,
did you have a return ticket?
I was hoping since it's all over the net, they couldn't check whether i have a return ticket or not.
Upon reading their Policy Document, it mentions about in terms of a claim and you have to be sent back to Australia, they will use my return ticket (which i wouldn't have) towards the cost.

Please help me out here guys.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

I can't vouch for that company however I know that Travel Insurance Direct allows you to extend your coverage for up to 12 months.

With them the only reason they say you need a return ticket is for if you want to be covered for "If the major part of your travel has been interrupted by you being hospitalised and you need to be escorted home, reimbursement of your return airfare" obviously if you don't have the return airfare you won't be covered for that part. Same with if you have "Transport costs to resume your travel if you had to return to Australia due to the hospitalisation of a relative."

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

thanks for the reply Jake.

Althought it is all online and i could do the "dodgy" and say i have this return ticket on this date and so on.
My issue is that, they might void my ticket in the event that I claim and i don't have return ticket to show.

Now I could just buy a return ticket if something happens, before i make the claim, the problem will be, what if i'm too injured(which obviously hoping it doesn't happen) but if that situation did arrive where a family member has to make the claim for me and yet doesn't know about me needing to purchase a return ticket first.
I'm worried my insurance policy might be voided and i cannot claim anymore.

How do people going to Canada on WHP or similar get travel insurance and don't have return tickets.

Any ideas?

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Your over complicating the system. First of all just because they are online doesn't mean you can be dodgy with them. They are going to ask for documentation to back up your claims, if you purchase a ticket back home a few days before you claim they will look into it I can assure you. Secondly atleast with travel insurance direct if you don't have a return ticket they will still cover you for everything except one thing as I said above.

Up to $6,000 for "If the major part of your travel has been interrupted by you being hospitalised and you need to be escorted home, reimbursement of your return airfare"

Since you don't have a return ticket you can't make the claim of up to $6,000 for one. However you will still be covered by their unlimited hospital medical expenses and as part of that you may be required to fly home if you are fit to do so and they will pay for it if its medically proven (this is my understand of the PDS). They do this because it saves them money if they bring you back they don't have to pay the bills for most things as you will be covered once your in Australia under Medicare.

I hope that clears things up. Your welcome to call whomever your insurance provider is to clarify if this is the case for them as well.

20.  Can I puchase a policy if I am departing on a one way ticket?
Yes, you can!

When purchasing a policy, enter the date you want the policy to end in the 'return date' section. Please be aware however that if you need to be repatriated during your trip and do not hold a return ticket at that time, you will be charged for the cost of that return ticket by the insurer.

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

thanks Jake.

Yeah TID was the second best (price wise).
Was hoping i might have just missed something on the itrek cover and that they would be able to insure me without a return ticket already purchased.

I might give them (itrek) another ring and see if they have something like TID's where you pay for the return ticket when they take you back here and the girl on the phone just didn't mention it.
Otherwise TID will be the go.

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

No I don't have a return ticket, the end date on my policy is exactly 12mths from the date i leave, with the option to extend.

As Jake has said that if they have to send you home they deduct the cost of your return ticket from their costs, if you don't have one they will charge you for one. Here is the wording used severl times in the itrek PDS

"We will not pay for:
the cost of a return ticket if You have not purchased a return air ticket to Australia. Note: We will deduct from Your claim the cost of the fare between Your last intended place of departure to Australia, at the same cabin class as Your initial departure fare."

Also I can't see how they could say you have to have a return ticket and offer insurance that lasts for more then 12mths as you can't book airfaires generally any earlier then 10 or 12mths in advance. So you wouldn't be able to have a return ticket.

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

oo chooky, glad you replied lol.

Looks like i was just unlucky that the person answering my question did not really know the answer and just made it up.
I will ring again tomorrow and point this out to them.
See what type of exclusion or fees apply that, but it looks like you have explained everything clearly here for me already anyway. just to double check.

Thanks!

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

So I've probably come back into this conversation at a late stage, but why are you guys paying for extended travel insurance when you can get BC MSP pretty easily within 3 - 4 months then get temporary travel insurance while visiting the states/elsewhere?

Just curious to see if there's something I'm missing smile

Re: Health insurance vs Travel insurance for Student exchange

Ahh, good good - It's amazing how few folks know that you can get MSP, and if you're going to be here longer than 3 months its mandatory (kinda).

Good luck in your travels!

Thats a really good price! I can see why you opted for it - I didn't compute the price like that when you mentioned it up above.
