Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

I'm planning to come to Canada under the working holiday program in about a month's time and was looking for any advice or tips on choosing an insurance provider - as required under the WHP. I'm currently living in the UK so ideally would like to use a Canadian provider - not an Australian one. Any suggestions?

Also the requirements state that insurance should cover you for the duration of the trip, but as far as I can see, most insurance providers only offer up to 1 year's coverage. Which means I wouldn't be covered for the two years I'm intending to stay. Is it possible to enter with only a couple of months insurance lined up and then purchase more while I'm in the country? Or will this casue problems when I come in and get my WHP permit? Anyone else been in this situation?

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

Hey Sarah,

What we did was to get four months of travel insurance through a provider, then switch over to the local health insurance - MSP in BC, and there is something similar in each state. This is because it is mandatory for anyone living in the country to be on these programs, and they are typically cheaper than most of the travel insurance plans out there.

There's a bit more discussion on this here as well:

I've never heard of anyone having proof of travel insurance checked when entering the country, so wouldn't sweat it too much provided you make sure you are covered.

Will you be staying in the one spot, or moving about (province to province)?

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

Hi Jared,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm planning to stay in Vancouver, unlikely that I'll be moving around apart from short holidays.

The LOI that I've received states: You must also provide proof of insurance coverage as per http://www.whpcanada.org.au/faq_eligibi … ibility_q3. I'd assumed this meant I would be classified as a tourist or visitor and that I didn't qualify for any medical cover supplied by the Canadian government and had to use insurance to cover any expenses I incurred while there.

My main concern is making sure that I have everything I need to get into the country and don't have any hassles getting the WHP permit when I come through Immigration. Was this type of documentation not stated as a requirement when you entered?

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

It was never not stated as a requirement, they just never asked for it. Even still, 4 months of coverage should be fine to get you through customs, as they have no idea what sort of arrangements you're making from then on.

Just looked at the link, and it's interesting what they say - they do make it sound like you need coverage for the whole period, but I've never heard of anyone getting pulled up on this. It also doesn't make sense in conjunction with the state/national ruling that any resident of Canada must apply for the government based health insurance.

It's a bit of a quandry, and again I'm sure you'll be fine with 4 months of coverage, if they ask for it at all...

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

I found this thread very interesting seeing as My wife and I got our letters of introductions a few days ago and am planning on living in montreal. we are in the process of working out our insurance. We also noticed how on the eligibility requirements it stating that you need to have comprehensive travel insurance for the duration of your stay and we were worried about whether this meant we had to get like 2 years of insurance to get the full 2 year Working permit.
However if you just need enough to cover you till you can get local health insurance that seems good. Theres no official place to go to verify this is there?

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

No official place to verify, just experience - Myself and a few others I know have been able to enter the country and start their work permit with only 4 months of insurance. Some have actually had to state that they're going on the local insurance, but others just pass on through.

If you wanted to be safe, it could be worth looking in to seeing if you can cancel a 2 year policy after you get the local insurance?

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

Ya I had a lot at alot of insurance policies and they tend to make you pay upfront so id have to look into cancelling. Plus I havent found one that goes over 18 months.

Im thinking Ill just get 6 months insurance and say im going on to local insurance. ( ill prob verify im eligible by checking with some people on facebook montreal group or sending em an email directly)
worst that can happen is they arent satisified with 6 months worth and what only give me a 6 month visa?
But ya like you where saying you havent heard of anyone having issues so should be fine smile

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

Just an update on what happened when I came into Canada - I came through Vancouver International and didn't get asked about insurance at all. I only had to show my passport and letter of introduction, answer some questions and they printed out my visa. And I had no problems getting on to the government health insurance plan. So quite an easy process after all the initial confusion.

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

Good one! How did it stack up in your calculations vs the other providers?

A little bit from that also helps pay for the running of CanAussie... thanks!

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

That's a great story Les! Goodonya! If you went for the World Nomads one then they're good too as you can extend whenever you want, from wherever you want.

Out of curiosity, where was the quote for $2k from? Jeeez that's expensive!

Edit: Hope you don't mind, but I just used the first part of your post in a link at the bottom of articles elsewhere on the site - I want to make sure others don't miss out on the same savings!

Re: Insurance when entering Canada on WHP

I checked a whole bunch of places form the Smart Traveler website and only a few had 2 year plans and they were about $1,750-$1,900.

Feel free to quote me man!
